Passionate about Healthcare UX
It was during my time as an F2 doctor in York where I decided to take a leap into the wonderful world of Healthcare UX, although at the time, I never even knew that’s what I was doing! In case you didn’t already know, UX stands for User eXperience, and put simply aims to answer the “what, when, who, why and how” questions relating to the way people interact with technology. And based on my clinical background, I tend to stick within the healthcare sector.
A lot of people thought I was crazy to make the career transition, but I’ve never been happier. You see, I still use the same investigatory skills and processes I employed as a doctor when I work on an IT brief. I still get given a problem to solve and must do some clever history taking, examine and investigate before coming up with a diagnosis and then checking that I was right or not. But what is most exciting is that I get to do a lot of design work, which I never thought I could do as part of my day job. I get paid to be creative, it’s wonderful!
I’m now a member of a very small number of clinically trained individuals who want to impact the care of patients by improving the technology that the general public, patients and clinical staff use. If clinical staff work more efficiently because of better technology, then patients with benefit too. To supplement my professional development, I’m studying an MSc in Human Computer Interaction with Ergonomics at UCL and actively work on health related UX projects.
